Shelley Mayer Romps in Westchester — With Our Help

APRIL 24 — In a big win for TWU Local 100’s political action operation, Democratic Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer handily defeated her Republican opponent, Julie Killian, by 15 percentage points. She succeeded George Latimer, now Westchester County Executive, in the special election for State Senate in Westchester’s 37th District.

The contest was closely watched as control of the State Senate hinged in part on the outcome. With Mayer’s win, the Senate is now evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, with one hold-out Democrat, Brooklyn’s Simcha Felder, holding the balance of power. TWU Local 100 was the first union to endorse Mayer in her bid for State Senate.
She has been a strong ally of transit workers in the county, supporting our school bus grievance bill and our earned sick leave initiative.

Local 100 President Tony Utano was on hand to celebrate Mayer’s victory at her Westchester campaign headquarters, following up on a day of activity where he went knocking on doors for votes with the political action team and union officers. Local 100 assigned five staffers in the weeks leading up to the election to coordinate our voter turnout efforts. Governor Andrew Cuomo, who also stumped for Mayer, was on hand at the victory party as well.
