TWU Local 100 Demands Hazard Pay at Hometown Heroes Parade
With all the media assembled for the historic event, TWU delivered a serious message: transit workers deserve hazard pay. The marching contingent, led by TWU Local 100 President Tony Utano, bore signs and chanted for hazard pay, garnering plenty of coverage from news outlets like NBC 4, where President Utano made his case for hazard pay for transit workers. Utano was also interviewed by WPIX 11 and CBS 2.
Democratic nominee Mayor Eric Adams, NY Attorney General Tish James and Sen. Charles Schumer all made a point of greeting the Local 100 officers and members.
Local 100 Secretary Treasurer Earl Phillips, Administrative Vice President Lynwood Whichard, and Vice Presidents John Chiarello, JP Patafio, Richard Davis, Robert Kelley, Shirley Martin, Eric Loegel and Peter Rosconi attended the parade as well.
The mayor’s office set strict limits on the number of participants unions, city agencies and other organizations could bring. Local 100 was granted 25 marchers. Several dozen other members were assigned to ride a vintage MTA subway car, an electric bus with the windows removed, or the city’s Transportation theme float.
We will be posting more on the parade tomorrow.
